The church in Gl. Rye is a gothic pilgrimage church which was built in the 15th century in order to seat the many pilgrims visiting Sct. Soeren`s Holy Spring, which is to be seen in the nearby forest. Of the original cruciform church, the size of a cathedral, only a small part remains and the exterior of the church is today somewhat peculiar. The tower is facing east and is detached, which is due to the collapse of the building during the 17th century.
The present tower is built 1911-12. Only few relics remain from the first period of the existence of the church; A cencer and a crucifix of late gothic style. The altarpiece is from 1630, the pulpit (renaissance) dates back to 1632, and the font is from before 1100. In the southern wall you can see a tombstone set over Bishop Svend in Aarhus, dead 1191. The stone was brought to the church when The Monestary in Oem was shut down in 1560. |
