The Monastic Museum of Denmark

Øm Monastery, today the Monastic Museum of Denmark, gives you – in anno domino 2009 – a unique opportunity to get a glimpse of the daily life in a monastery from the Middle Ages. Walk about the ruins, visit the museum, smell the herbs and listen to the storyteller. Use your imagination and the learned abbot Gunnar may appear before your mind’s eye, at prayer and at work; in life and death.

Up to the Reformation in 1536 the monasteries and convents constituted the most important factor of power in the Danish Lake District. And they came to play a decisive role in the shaping of both the landscape and community. They have left their marks everywhere. Fetch the folder about the Monastic Route from the Tourist Information and follow in their footsteps.
