Since the Riverboat Jazz Festival started in 1966 with three small passenger boats that sailed a 2 hour trip up Gudenå river, the festival has grown into a big event in quality and extent. Riverboat Jazz Festival is Denmark's oldest jazz festival and is today a large international festival with the classical jazz profile. It's the kind of jazz that swings, brings out the smile and makes you want to dance. During the first weekend of the school's summer vacation, the jazz will swing in all of Silkeborg center and on Gudenå river. Jazz can be found in the streets, in tents and courtyards, in established music venues, on the Hjejle boats, restaurants, cafés, sites etc. A true string of pearls of Danish and foreign jazz names will play in front of the many musical guests that come to Silkeborg. There's plenty of opportunity to experience jazz on land and on water when approximately 70 bands/individuals visit the festival. All in walking-distance from the city-centre.
Most of the festival is free. Tickets for sail trips, church concerts and concerts at established music venues are required.
